Social media is impacting how we do business online in new and exciting ways. Customers are sharing more and more data about what they're doing online and the things they like. Getting people to share your products on social networks is a great way to bring in traffic and find new customers.

But ecommerce sites are stuck in a hard place because the number one goal of an ecommerce site isn't sharing, it's selling.

Take the "King" of ecommerce sites, Amazon.com, as an example. They have sharing tools on their product pages, but it's not quite what you'd think:

While the sharing links are above the fold, they're in the bottom-right corner of the screen. And you can bet that Amazon has tested that spot and found that it's the best place for those links.

It's hard to know how to promote your products and brand on socia

Several years ago (2007) I was asked to give a presentation at Jill Whalen's High Rankings Seminar in Minneapolis. This was pretty cool because I had been reading Jill's newsletter for years beforehand. The topic I spoke on was "UnGoogle Your Search Marketing," where I discussed how to employ blogs, social media and optimized press releases as alternative, yet complimentary sources of web site traffic.

While search is the primary source of web traffic for our sites at TopRank Online Marketing and certainly for our client web sites, I think that now, more than ever, it's important to "UnGoogle" your search marketing. Before anyone thinks I'm talking about ignoring Google completely, I suggest reading on.

Focusing content creation efforts solely to serve Search Engine Optimization purposes can be limiting. If the the only purpose for creating content is for

I've been thinking about how entering the content marketing space is not for the faint of heart. It can be a signifcant undertaking both in terms of resources and a change in an organization's approach to marketing and sales. Obviously, content marketing is better for some companies and industries than others. Outside help also makes a difference.

While increasing numbers of companies are realizing they  must provide more than product information to satisfy customers, many of those same companies fail by implementing random tactics and missing out on benefits like better search visibility.

In order to take full advantage of the significant gains in search traffic that are available with a content focused marketing effort, it's essential to answer some key questions:

After a tough 2009, the majority of small businesses have high hopes of emerging from the sales doldrums in 2010. Some 86% of small business owners expect 2010 revenues to be equal to or higher than 2009 figures, according to research firm Ad-Ology. However, despite that glimmer of confidence, most small business owners don't plan to increase their marketing budgets in the near term. In a February 2010 survey of small business owners called the Merchant Confidence Index, 46% of respondents said they expect their marketing expenditures to remain stable over the next three months, while just 29% expected to increase marketing spend.

We've been stressing the great potential benefits of blogging to clients for some time now. We've put together a list of some great reasons to have a regularly updated blog on your business site as a part of the business's online marketing strategy.

Search engines love content – blogs are built for content

You've heard the term before – Content is King. Having great search engine rankings requires having great, useful content on your website. Google's job is to present searchers with the most useful, relevant content in response to their search queries and Google is good at its job. At its very core, a blog is a tool that's built to be regularly updated with fresh content and search engines recognize this. Google, using various on-page elements and frequency of posts, can recognise and distinguish a blog from a regular website.
